The book has been beloved for generations and the animated movie’s songs are well-known by kids of all ages. The story follows the Grinch, a grumpy and lonely creature who hates Christmas and tries to ruin it for the cheerful Whos in Whoville. He learns the true meaning of Christmas and puts aside his mean ways to join in the generosity, kindness and community of Christmas with the Whos.

Grinch Puppet Tutorial

Print out the PDF template. Use the photos to determine the color of each template piece. 

  • Trace the hat pattern on red paper
  • Mark out the head on light green paper
  • Use white paper for the hat pom pom, the hat fur edge and the fur edges of the sleeves and shoes
  • Trace the eye patterns on yellow paper
  • Trace the eyebrow shape on dark green paper

Glue the white hat fur and pom-pom to the tip of the hat.

Glue the white fur collar and fur sleeve edges to the red coat.

Glue the white fur to the top side of the red shoes.

Attach the green hands to the end of each coat sleeve.

Attach the completed coat and hat to the Grinch body. 

Glue the shoes to the fee of the body.

Glue the eyes to the face part of the head pattern of the Grinch. Draw the eyeballs on the yellow eyes. Use the black marker to outline the yellow eyes. Then attach the darker green eyebrows.

Add eyeballs to the eyes with the red marker and draw the Grinch’s face using the black marker. Draw the mouth and details using the images as a guide.

Attach with tape to a popsicle stick to create a puppet. You can also use the paper figure in other craft projects suggested below.

Tips and Tricks

Use paper lunch bags to create a Grinch paper bag puppet. Enlarge the puppet template and cutting the body in half at the neck. Blue the body to the bottom side of the bag and the head to the part that is actually the bottom of the bag. Line the head and body up on the flap before attaching.

Make a Grinch popsicle stick puppet by attaching the competed figure to a craft popsicle stick.

Use construction paper instead of card stock. This works better with a paper bag puppet than a stick puppet.

Use white, cream or light brown paper to trace the grinch template and then color in the different pattern pieces before assembling the puppet craft.

Add this Grinch figure to a piece of rectangle shaped cardstock to create a bookmark. Gift the papercraft bookmark with a How the Grinch Stole Christmas book for a super fun gift.

Instructions

  1. Print out the PDF template. Use the photos to determine the color of each template piece. Cut out all the paper pieces.
  2. Glue the white hat fur and pom-pom to the tip of the hat. Glue the white fur collar and fur sleeve edges to the red coat. Glue the white fur to the top side of the red shoes.
  3. Attach the green hands to the end of each coat sleeve. Attach the completed coat and hat to the Grinch body. 
  4. Glue the shoes to the fee of the body.
  5. Glue the eyes to the face part of the head pattern of the Grinch. Draw the eyeballs on the yellow eyes. Use the black marker to outline the yellow eyes. Then attach the darker green eyebrows.
  6. Add eyeballs to the eyes with the red marker and draw the Grinch’s face using the black marker. Draw the mouth and details using the images as a guide.
  7. Attach to a popsicle stick, paper bag or use in other craft projects.
